Help Guide For Forklifts With No Forward/Reverse
A common issue operators may face when operating a forklift is that the forklift is not going into forward or reverse. This is a problem that usually requires attending to as soon as possible as a forklift that cannot move in one direction or the other renders it mostly inoperable. While it is not always a simple solution, this article will explore two simple checks to complete regarding this issue.
Forward / Reverse Lever
On modern forklifts, there is often a lever on the side of the steering column which controls which direction the forklift will move in. This steering lever is similar to the size and shape of an indicator lever on a car, as seen in figure 1. While a simple check, it is important to ensure that the lever is in the right position as it can be a costly endeavor to call a service technician out for them to simply move the lever.
Forward / Reverse Switch
On older forklift models, there will often be a small metal switch on the side of the steering column, which will perform the same function as the forward/reverse lever on a modern forklift. This switch, as seen in figure 2 and 3, can at times be more finnicky than the lever so it is important to properly test and ensure that the switch is in the right place before committing to any further action.
Start Up Sequence
Another simple test as to why the forklift may not be going into forward or reverse is to ensure that the correct start-up sequence has been carried out. The issue may not lie with the forward/reverse switch/lever but may be a result of the start-up sequence being completed out of order or without a step. More information on this topic can be found in the article Forklift Not Starting? Try These 5 Checks.
Other Issues
In an instance where these tests still produce the same result of the forklift not being able to select forward/reverse, a technician will need to be called out. This issue can be a tricky one as it can be caused by a variety of issues such as a wiring problem, blown fuse or low transmission oil. After an assessment on site, however, the technician should soon be able to identify the problem.
Whilst a hard issue to diagnose over the phone, if a forklift is not going into forward or reverse, then it is an important money saver to firstly ensure that the forward/reverse switch/lever is in the right position. It is always important to check that the correct start up sequence has been initiated as well as if it is one of these issues, it can be costly for a technician to come out only for a simple task. If neither of these checks have worked however, then a technician will be required to come assess the issue. Are you experiencing this problem now?
